Virtual Lab Fracture Test
In this simulation of a fracture test, you will explicitly observe the mechanics–materials linkage. In order to do this, we must span many length scales. These range from perhaps a few centimeters at the continuum mechanics level (plot on the left), to a few 10’s of microns for slip planes (figure on the lower right), to a few nanometers of crystal dimension (figure on the upper right). By clicking on the load button, you will observe simultaneously the deformation across all the scales.
Note: This simulation does not try to present all of the very complex physics occurring at such small length scales, but rather tries only to present the essential concepts.
Note: At the end of the Fracture Test, a review quiz is available.
